Ang henus na Australopithecus (Latin australis "ng timog", Griyego πίθηκος pithekos "bakulaw") ay isang grupo ng hindi na umiiral na mga hominid, mga gracile australopithecines, na ninuno ng henus na Homo. Ayon sa Proyektong Henoma ng Tsimpansi, ang tao (Ardipithecus, Australopithecus, at Homo) at ang tsimpansi(Pan troglodytes at Pan paniscus) ay may parehas na angkang naghiwalay mula sa isang parehas na ninuno noong 5-6 milyong taon na ang nakalipas.
